As a general goal, include at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine. If you want to lose weight, maintain weight loss or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to increase your activity even more.

How to stay active?

  • Exercise whenever you can. Christmas is a busy time, especially for families, so try to find practical ways to exercise as part of your daily routine. Wake up 30 minutes earlier than you normally do and use the extra time to walk on your treadmill or go jogging around the neighborhood. It is an excellent exercise all year round and can improve your fitness levels, reduce blood pressure, prevent cancer and even help you sleep. It is also a great way to burn calories with 13 minutes of jogging burning 100 calories.
  • Make it a family affair – Plan activities to do, such as walking the neighborhood to view the holiday lights, which involve your whole family. Kids become particularly stalwart over the holidays so encourage them to enjoy physical activities, which will benefit them as well as yourself (as you accompany them on the activity).
  • Don’t forget strength training – Maintain your muscle mass by breaking down your routine to basics. Many people tend to make-up for Christmas indulgences by over doing cardio- but strength training is just important in maintaining your fitness.

  • Roast peanuts on an open fire (31 minutes).Save your Christmas shopping for the last-minute: Walking briskly through a mall with a stack of packages will burn through 100 calories in just over 19 minutes. Wrap 21 of those gifts when you get home.
  • Redecorating! Bring out your inner home designer and rearrange the furniture in your living room or bedroom. Just thirty minutes of moving around chairs, tables and sofas will burn 225 calories. And all that heavy pushing and pulling will strengthen your muscles, too.
  • Instead of spending your afternoons huddled in front of the sofa with your family and friends, why not suggest an afternoon walk? This will allow everyone to get some fresh air and exercise. Walking also reduces your risk of heart disease, reduces high blood pressure and prevents osteoporosis. On top of this it can help you burn some Christmas calories. Walking slowly at 2mph burns 100 calories in 37minutes. Increasing the pace to 3.5mph burns the same amount of calories in 25 minutes.
  • Take the stairs whenever possible. If at home do the stairs twice every time you need to go upstairs. Small steps add up! 10,000 steps/day indicates the individual as “active”. You can even make this your Christmas theme and share it with your family and friends, get them a pedometer as well, and make it a challenge!
  • Bathe your dog. Assuming your body weight is: 70 kg, you would burn 245 calories per hour.
  • Play with your kids instead of just watching them. They’ll love it and you’ll be more active than you would otherwise be just sitting on the couch.
  • While waiting for the kettle to boil (two minutes) do stretches and squats.
  • Dance! Make your dinner party upbeat and energetic- everyone looks for an excuse to shake it! Offer it to them, and shed off 300 calories in one hour.

Finally make sure that you get a good amount of sleep, at least 7 hours per night so you’d keep up your optimal performance towards your happy and productive life. And don’t forget your vitamins, which should be a supplement to your diet. They will give you that small boost needed during the Christmas party season.

Approach the holiday season with the idea of keeping everything in moderation. Keeping fit and healthy will not only mean you will look good at the Christmas party, but will positively affect your mind and your resistance to illness.

One more thing, it is highly advised that you DO NOT leave your Christmas shopping for the last-minute; tip number 4 is for humor purposes!
