‘Don’t Let Rheumatoid Arthritis Distort the Picture’

Beirut, 1st June 2011 – To mark the National Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Awareness Month, the Ministry of Public Health and the Lebanese Society of Rheumatology with the Association of Arthritis Patients in Lebanon ‘IRADA’ and the support of Hoffmann-La Roche will launch the first RA National campaign in Lebanon. The campaign entitled “Don’t let Rheumatoid Arthritis Distort the Picture” will aim to educate people on the importance of early detection in order to beat the disease.

The nation-wide awareness campaign is scheduled to run during the month of June 2011 which has been locally proclaimed by the Ministry of Public Health as the RA awareness month. The main focus of this campaign remains to endorse early detection of signs and symptoms as well as techniques to impact treatment decisions, therefore improving the patients’ quality of life.

As part of the awareness campaign activities, a walkathon will be held in Beirut Souks on June 19 to fight against RA and reinforce the campaign’s core messages.  Throughout this endorsement, IRADA will be working closely with RA patients to provide them with all needed assistance to surpass isolation and loneliness while cooperating with the physicians of the Lebanese Society of Rheumatology.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common forms of autoimmune disease, affecting around 20 million people worldwide. This progressive disease, of unknown etiology, causes inflammation of the joints and other areas of the body which leads to swelling, joint pain and stiffness. If left untreated, chronic inflammation of RA can cause permanent joint destruction and deformity.
